Cheques may soon be a thing of the past.

The U.K. Payments Council, the organization that sets strategy for all UK bank payments just voted to phase out paper cheques. Sweden and Norway have already eliminated the use of paper cheques. With cheque usage falling by 40% since 2005, can Canada be far behind?

Adagio EFT is an add-in for Adagio Payables that allows you to:

  • Generate a payables file to transmit to your bank.
  • Email or fax advices to your vendors.
  • Mix electronic payments and old-fashioned cheques.

Getting a new computer soon?

New format preferred for Canadian cheques.

The Canadian Payments Association, representing Canada's banks, now recommends that all cheques cleared through the banks meet the new formatting rules. It had been planned to make the format mandatory, but that has been relaxed in part because so many companies are using electronic payments instead.

Users of Adagio Payables need to use version 8.0A or later.

Users of Simply Accounting must have version 2006 or later.

In both cases, Business Computer Centre can help you format your cheque forms to meet the new standard.

Of course, you will also have to arrange with your printer to get cheques that comply with the new rules, or use blank cheques available from Business Computer Centre.
