If you are considering new computers that will be used run your Adagio accounting programs, may we make the following suggestions:
-
For normal business use, Windows XP is still stable and user-friendly, so there is little incentive to switch unless some other software is known to use features of Windows 7. Although Adagio programs run just fine on Vista, Windows 7 is proving to be less problematic. If you do get Windows 7, make sure it is the Pro version, not one of the home versions usually bundled with new computers.
-
If you are running a peer-to-peer network with more than 2 or 3 computers, consider buying a server with some version of Windows Server operating system on it. You can use Linux Server, but it is not officially supported. (Linux is a perfectly good server operating system, but there are relatively few technicians with the knowledge and experience to configure and support it.)
-
Consider upgrading your local area network (LAN) to gigabyte speed. Your computer technician or consultant will have to confirm whether the wiring in place will support this speed. If it does, the performance gains can be significant.
-
All else being equal, more memory in the workstations will usually improve performance, particularly if you often have several programs open at once (like Adagio Payables, Adagio Ledger, Excel, MS Word, e-mail, etc.) It is an inexpensive upgrade that can be worth a lot. However, if you are running a 32-bit version of Windows, any memory over 4 gigabytes is wasted. 64-bit versions of Windows can use much more.
-
More and more people are finding the need to work in multiple programs. That can be made a lot easier with the addition of a second monitor. It takes up extra disk space, but once you have it for a while, you will wonder how you got along without it.
-
In addition to Adagio, you will be running other software, some of which will integrate with Adagio. Call us to be sure they will work together; for example, the 64 version of MS Office has problems with the "Direct to Excel" function in Adagio.
